My initial thoughts
This is my third go at a vegan beauty box subscription so I clearly love the idea! The first one was a disaster, after much deliberating over the right box, the company took my money and then went bust before the first box even shipped. The second vegan beauty box was Ipsy, which was great but not all vegan or cruelty free and a bit too much make-up for me. So, this is my third attempt and I was pretty excited to get the first box.
I signed up on August 17 and was immediately billed for the first box. The website stated a shipping date of August 16, so I was a bit concerned that I hadn’t heard anything by August 22. Had I missed the boat for an August box? What about the fact I had already paid?
I sent an email to customer service and received a reply the next day stating that there are several rounds of shipping and I should receive a shipping notification soon. The notification never came, but the box arrived on August 24, unfortunately so did a demand from Canada Post for another $13!!!
The box was smaller than I expected but that meant that the products fit very well inside. I received two full size products and three very decent sized samples (one was half the size of the full product). I kind of didn’t want to like the box since I had ended up paying $46.55 CAD for a box that’s listed as $22.95 per month, but I was very excited to receive a box of vegan beauty treats and was eager to try all the products.
William Roam Sense Body Lotion
$24.99 for 225 mL so the $4.95 value listed on the card makes sense.
This seems to be a range of high-end hotel toiletries. The packaging is very nice and I would be really happy to get these in a hotel where I was staying. At first, I wasn’t a big fan of the scent, it was quite overpowering and a bit masculine. I have really dry skin and have to use body lotion every day so smell is important to me, I want it to feel like more of a luxury than a chore. However, the fragrance is a lot more mellow when applied and actually leaves a very pleasant scent on your skin. The other thing that impressed me was the texture, it felt like more of a body cream than a lotion which I was happy with.
Sade Baron Fresh Lux Body Mist
$10 for 60 mL – full size product
I am not really a body mist person so was not super excited about this product. And the scent is pleasant but not something I want to smell of, however, it seems like this product is designed more to refresh the skin and the scent doesn’t linger. My son and I have discovered that it makes a great foot refresher, the nozzle gives a very nice spray and it feels great on these super hot days we have been having. I am really intrigued to try more products from this Toronto-based company. They have some lovely looking products on the website and get great reviews.
Derma-E Rose Cleansing Oil
$24.99 for 60ml, $6 card value seems about right.
I am a sucker for anything that smells like roses! This was very pleasant to use as it smells so nice and feels good on my skin, I love products that feel luxurious to use. My skin is very dry and I have recently discovered that a non-drying cleanser followed by a cleansing milk works for me. I used this cleansing oil to clean my skin before using my usual milk cleanser and this left my skin feeling very clean and not dry at all. The price point on this product seems very reasonable, so I would consider purchasing it and am interested in trying other products from this brand.
Saiva Naturals Brightening Serum
$24 for 15 mL (Half of the full size product)
The card states that the Saiva product is a lip balm but the picture is the facial serum so I think it’s a mistake. I love a lip balm but was really happy to receive a serum instead and the value is higher too, so happy days!
The packaging is not very exciting and it sounded very ‘natural’ so I wasn’t convinced it was going to be my thing but this product is amazing! It has a gorgeous thick texture and the scent actually reminds me of the lotions and potions in my Gran’s bathroom cabinet which I loved to rake through and smell. I really felt it made a difference to my skin, it just felt better. I am really interested to see if it makes a difference to my problem winter skin (very dry and irritated) and will definitely purchase this in the future.
100% Pure Gemmed Lip Gloss in Rainbow Aura
$26 ($35 CAD on all the websites I checked)
Love it!!! I am not a big lip gloss fan and the pictures of the packaging looked a bit cheap. I also wasn’t thrilled at the idea of shimmery gemstones (I’m not into shimmery). But I’m happy to say I got it completely wrong. I love the way it looks on my lips, quite shear but with a hint of glamour. It really gives a lovely, dare I say, shimmer!!!
Vegan beauty box final thoughts
All in all, I’m really happy with my first box. It is very frustrating to be paying so much more for this vegan beauty box in Canada but I still think it’s pretty good value and I am really happy to be trying some new vegan products. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone in the US (why wouldn’t you?!?!?) and would still recommend it to everyone else if your budget allows. I will try it for a few months then decide if I can still justify the cost. I’ll keep you updated.
